Raising Daughters With Hayaa, Wisdom, and Firmness

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh
Muslim mothers must lead with both mercy and authority in an age where girls are pressured to showcase their beauty for likes, praise, and public attention. Allah commands believing women to guard their modesty, not display their adornment openly, and draw their coverings properly; He also commands parents to protect their families from the Fire. Modesty is, therefore, not a “style preference" but part of obedience, dignity, and guardianship.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Modesty is part of faith,” and, “Modesty brings nothing but good.” These authentic narrations show that hayaa is not a weakness. It is strength, self-respect, and a shield for the heart.
Key factors for mothers to remember:
Connect before correcting: hear your daughter’s fears, pressures, and insecurities.
Lead with authority: be gentle, but do not treat Allah’s commands as optional.
Explain the wisdom: modest dress protects dignity and limits public access to private beauty.
Name modern dangers: beauty-centered posting can fuel comparison, body-image distress, and online bullying.
Set clear boundaries: define what may be worn, filmed, and posted.
Replace, not only remove: guide girls toward halal confidence, creativity, and identity.
A daughter should know her beauty is an amanah, not public property.
Yaa Allah, “Make our daughters beauty that is guarded by hayaa, a heart anchored in iman, and a dignity no trend can steal.”
