How to Use Nature Study in Middle and High School
Nature study isn’t just for younger students! On the contrary, as students begin to understand interconnections and processes in their middle and high school years, they are prepared to delve deeper into nature-related topics. During these nature study “science labs,” older students will be able to use their knowledge of higher-level physical science, biology, and chemistry right in the field! These years are also perfect for presenting nature-based research projects that encompass all kinds of subjects
Nature Journaling for Regular People
Quite often, I hear that nature journaling is intimidating. Either they don't know what to do with those blank pages, or they become entrenched in the belief that only beautiful art is worthy.
Pages matter. Some people even find nature journals boring due to their tendency to simply sketch and move on. Let’s change all of that today! Try using bird or nature stickers from the “Dollar Tree” for those students who are not artistically gifted. You can also express nature through poetry or writing. Cameras are always welcome as well. Remember! Art is interpretation.
Nature Study Without the Nature Walk
Did you know you don’t necessarily have to go outside to enjoy nature study? It’s true! While going outside is certainly my preference, some families can’t get outside for one reason or another, as well as families who simply don’t enjoy taking nature walks. Try putting a birdhouse right outside your window!
Tip 1: “Baby, it’s cold outside.” When it’s too cold to explore outside, bring nature inside. The “eyeclops” is one of my favorite science tools that all K-12 students can enjoy. Take an up-close and personal look at the biology of science.
Look at Allah’s creation through a microscopic lens.

Tip 2: The winter season means the cold and flu seasons. Let your students explore this book of bacteria and learn why it is crucial to practice good hygiene.
