The Importance of Self-Care for The Busy Muslim Mom

The Importance of Self-Care For The Busy Muslim Mom

Dear Busy Umm,

Your energy is precious. Just 5 minutes a day can significantly impact your life. When you care for yourself, you are stronger, more centered, and more present for your family—and that, too, is an act of love and ibadah. May Allah grant you strength, sabr, and serenity on your journey. Ameen.

As mothers, we give endlessly—nurturing our children, managing the home, supporting our spouses, and striving to stay connected to Allah. In the midst of all this, we often place ourselves last. However, Islam teaches us balance, and taking care of yourself is not selfish—it’s necessary.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Indeed, your body has a right over you." (Bukhari)

This hadith serves as a gentle reminder that our well-being matters. When we are emotionally, spiritually, and physically depleted, we cannot give our best to those who depend on us. Self-care allows us to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with our purpose—so we can serve with ihsan (excellence).

Self-care for a busy mom doesn’t require hours at a spa or long breaks from the family. It can be simple, intentional, and fit right into the rhythm of a busy household. Protect your peace!

3-Step Plan: 5-Minute Daily Self-Care

Step 1: Pause for Dhikr (2 minutes)
Find a quiet corner—even if it's just the kitchen before everyone wakes up. Close your eyes and say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar slowly and mindfully. Let your heart settle with the remembrance of Allah.

Step 2: Breathe & Stretch (2 minutes)
Stand tall, roll your shoulders, stretch your arms, and take deep breaths. Tip: Invest in a small spray bottle from the Dollar Tree and mix one dropper of essential peppermint oil with water. Spray into the air or the inside of your niqab (don't worry, the smell fades after a few minutes). Inhale peace, exhale stress. These small acts boost your circulation and clear mental fog.

Step 3: One Act of Kindness to Yourself (1 minute)
Drink a warm cup of tea slowly, apply your favorite lotion after a warm shower, or recite a short du’a just for yourself. Lastly, acknowledge your efforts. You are doing your best, and that’s enough.

The Prophet ﷺ was sent to perfect good character, and these values must be modeled and taught daily.

“The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.” — (Bukhari)

We want parents to teach children personal responsibility, time management, and awareness that they are accountable to Allah for their actions, words, and choices.
